If you run solar, wind, storage, or grid projects, your PMP renewal asks for the same 60 PDUs as everyone else: 60 hours over three years, at least 8 in each Talent Triangle area. The hard part is finding training that teaches the work you actually do and counts toward the credential. Generic PM courses rarely touch interconnection, permitting, or power procurement, so energy PMs pad their renewal with material they will never use.

The renewal requirement, in plain terms

PMI wants 60 PDUs per three-year cycle. At least 35 come from education, with a minimum of 8 in each area: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. Up to 25 can come from giving back. You self-report education hours through PMI's CCRS, and a PMI Authorized Training Partner is not required to claim relevant learning.

How energy development maps to the Talent Triangle

The milestone map of a renewable project already spans all three areas.

Ways of Working covers delivery and process: managing the interconnection queue, sequencing permitting, running EPC and construction, and closing out commissioning. Energy PMs fill this area most easily, because it looks like classic project delivery.

Power Skills covers people and influence: negotiating land leases, handling community engagement, and aligning a developer, an EPC contractor, and an offtaker who all want different things. Every stakeholder conversation you run is Power Skills work.

Business Acumen covers the commercial and strategic side: power purchase agreements, tax equity, capital budgeting, and the economics that decide whether a project reaches notice to proceed. Energy PMs live in these terms daily yet rarely get formal credit for learning them, so this is the area to target on purpose.

A worked year of learning

Picture a solar development PM mapping one year toward renewal:

• A course on managing the interconnection process, six hours, assigned to Ways of Working.
• A course on stakeholder and community engagement for infrastructure, four hours, assigned to Power Skills.
• A course on power procurement and PPAs, six hours, assigned to Business Acumen.
• A course on capital budgeting for clean energy, four hours, assigned to Business Acumen.

That is 20 education PDUs in a year, every area minimum cleared, and four skills the PM uses on the next project. Repeat across the cycle and the 60 hours arrive without a single wasted webinar.

What to study, and why it counts twice

Pick learning that sharpens the job and fills the credential at once. A course on the interconnection process teaches the most common way a solar timeline slips, and it counts. A course on power procurement teaches the terms behind notice to proceed, and it fills the Business Acumen minimum. You leave with a skill for the next project and hours you can claim.

How to self-report in CCRS

1. Log in at ccrs.pmi.org.
2. Select Education, then Course or Training.
3. Enter the provider, title, and completion date.
4. Assign the hours to the matching Talent Triangle area.
5. Submit and keep your completion certificate for audit.

One hour of instruction equals one PDU. Claims usually post right away.

Where renewable energy PMs lose credit

• Claiming everything as Ways of Working. Split your hours so the Power Skills and Business Acumen minimums are covered.
• Skipping the commercial courses. That leaves the Business Acumen floor empty until the deadline.
• Losing records. Keep certificates for the full cycle.
